Storing the smoothie requires a few simple steps to be observed correctly. However, it must be said that these are advice related to two different occasions of use: the one relating to temporary conservation, in order to the fact that the smoothie will be consumed soon, and the one concerning the longer conservation, in consideration of the fact that it will not be consumed within a few minutes.
For each of these hypotheses, we have a solution. To find out, just read this guide.
How is the smoothie stored? Preliminary operations
It seems like a stupid question, and yet it is not, especially if we are very attentive to the health of our appliances. First of all, let’s start by saying that smoothies can never be preserved without superior protection.
Therefore, the first rule to follow before storing the smoothie is to proceed with a thorough cleansing of the glass and then with its covering. If you do not want to try your hand at a meticulous covering, you can leave the blender glass covered by its cap so as to keep the mixture unaltered as long as possible.
Obviously, before this step, make sure the jug is properly dry and clean.
Store the smoothie in the refrigerator
When you choose to refrigerate your smoothie, consider placing it in the corner of your cooler that allows you to have it close at hand. In this case, we are not talking about real conservation but about the correct positioning of the jug. This step will allow you to protect the liquid compound from possible accidental spills.
Here the rule is simple: make sure you have cleaned and dried the inside of your refrigerator well and then worry about putting the jug away with the lid included: all the preparations somehow absorb odors and germs, so it is good to intervene correctly. This closure will prevent any air build-up during the shake’s resting hours.
In the case of storing smoothies in the refrigerator, know that the ideal temperature is from 4 degrees upwards, within 8 degrees Celsius and that the shelf life cannot exceed 12 hours at the most: under the penalty of losing the freshness and taste of the food.
If, on the other hand, you choose to let the smoothie rest out of the refrigerator, make sure that your mixture is away from water or any heat sources: both are rather altering the properties and consistency of the smoothie.
Keeping the smoothie longer: is it possible?
It’s best to store smoothies away from heat, light, and oxygen in an airtight container. In general, your smoothie will then keep in the refrigerator for up to two days.
When we prepare a smoothie, we must take into account the ingredients we used to compose it. We often use milk, whey, yogurt, and other foods that generally provide vitamins within the canonical three hours of their opening.
But if you want to keep a smoothie for as long as possible, you can use the freezer. In this case, however, we will not put the smoothie already prepared in the freezer, thinking we can leave it there for months. On the contrary, we can opt to freeze the ingredients that we will need to prepare it.
In this way, we will always have fruit and vegetables at hand, even if not in season, and a fresh smoothie. Some foods can also be frozen for 12 consecutive months, unlike some serums and substances that, once processed, cannot be subjected to long storage.
Finally, do not neglect the vacuum. There are some blender models on the market that allow you to keep your smoothie vacuum-packed for a while. Once the air has been extracted from the mixture, the smoothie could be stored in the refrigerator for a few days without subjecting the ingredients to the normal oxidation process they would undergo without vacuum packing.
In general, however, we always recommend that you consume your smoothie within a few hours to be sure of ingesting all its beneficial and nutritional properties.
